| There are many reasons why teenagers may not do well in school. These include having poor motivation, having a learning disability, behavior problems or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. To find out why your teen is having school problems, you should begin by talking to his teacher or other school officials to see why they think he is doing poorly. They may be able to do testing to check his intelligence level and see if he has a specific learning disability.
If your child has a short attention span, is easily distracted, and/or is hyperactive and impulsive, then he may have ADHD. Your pediatrician can help evaluate your child for this problem and for further treatment.
See the School Performance Guide for more information.
