| Although prior breast surgery can sometimes cause problems with breastfeeding, many women who have had breast surgery are able to breastfeed their children. Since a breast reduction surgery may severe and disrupt the milk ducts and relocate the nipples, there can be more problems after this type of surgery then after a breast augmentation.
Other types of surgery, including a biopsy or lump removal (lumpectomy), usually do not cause any problems.
You should consider working with a lactation consultant if you have had prior breast surgery (including implants) and want to breastfeed your baby. Also see your Pediatrician to monitor your newborn's weight gain and the adequacy of breastfeeding.
