Although very popular, many people are getting tired of all of the reality TV shows.

From the Apprentice and Fear Factor to Wife Swap, while they may be somewhat entertaining, most don't have too many redeeming qualities.

The Nanny TV shows, such as Nanny 911 and Supernanny, are a little different. Nobody gets fired or has to eat bugs, and there are no prizes, except maybe a happier and less dysfunctional family.

Although I have to confess that I haven't made it through a whole episode yet, the parts I did see were well done. In addition to helping you see related problems that you may be having with your own kids, the Nanny TV shows can:

  • help you understand basic discipline techniques, including how to be firm, set limits, and be consistent

  • demonstrate how to tackle difficult parenting problems, such as temper tantrums, nagging, hitting, back talking, and mealtime battles

  • teach you that parents have to share responsibility, both for their kids current 'bad' behaviors and to replace them with more appropriate behaviors

Most importantly, these shows can help you to see that change is possible. You likely won't have such dramatic results and I'm not even sure that they really even 'fix' those kids in a single week, but most parents will learn something from each episode.

These shows can be particularly helpful for those parents who don't like reading parenting books and don't have access to a parenting professional to help them with their problems.

At the very least, these shows, with their wild and out-of-control kids, will likely make you feel better about your own kids, who may not seem so bad in comparison...

Suppernanny is on Monday nights at 10pm/9 CST on ABC and Nanny 911 is on Wednesday nights at 10pm/9 CST on Fox.

Do you want to be on TV and have kids that you need help with? Both shows are looking for families for future episodes:
