Wouldn't it be great if every time that you were faced with an important parenting issue, like your child being afraid to go to school, that you could remember a great story from your own childhood that would make everything better?
Or maybe you could remember a story that your own mother or father told you the next time that your child has a problem with sharing, being bossy, or getting teased at school.
These types of stories, especially if they involve how you overcame a similar issue or problem, can be very helpful for kids to hear.
Unfortunately, most parents don't have a ready supply of these stories at the tip of their tongue, and don't always know just what to say to make everything better.
Reading a good children's book, such as The Big Brown Box when your child is having trouble sharing, or The Meanest Thing To Say if your child is being teased at school, can be a good substitute for your own personal stories.
A good book can 'offer your child the reassurance that he isn't alone, that other children have faced the same problem and found ways to deal with it,' and allow you to 'reach your child without preaching or lecturing.'
How do you know which books are best though? Bookstores and libraries are lined with books for children and it can be hard to make a good choice.
Cheryl Coon's Books To Grow With can help choosing books to read aloud to your kids easy. It is a great resource for parents who are faced with 100's of topics, from bullies to sibling rivalry.
