When your child becomes a teenager, it is almost like you are a new parent again.
Now that you have conquered potty training and tantrums (well, hopefully you are past tantrums), you are faced with new challenges, like peer pressure and puberty.
While there are plenty of parenting books about various issues facing parents of teens, this new book from the American Academy of Pediatrics, Caring for Your Teenager, puts it all together in an easy read reference that is a must have for all parents of teenagers.
The teen years are a time of big changes for your kids, not only physically, but also emotionally and socially. Knowing what is normal and recognizing early signs of problems can help you be a better parent and help guide your child through adolescence.
With clear examples, Caring for Your Teenager provides you with what you need to know to respond to your child. Do you know what to do once your teen decides he wants more privacy, wants less 'family time' or becomes more moody?
Other information is more practical, such as typical allowances, curfews and chores.
Most parents will find the chapters on 'The Hurdles of Adolescence' most helpful. Topics include sexuality, talking to your kids about sex, and helping them resist sexual pressure and the pressure to try drugs.
Caring for Your Teenager also includes brief articles on common medical conditions that affect teens, like acne, scoliosis, asthma, etc.
Although, like other parenting books from the AAP, Caring for Your Teenager is reliable and accurate, I did find one error. In Table 17.2, labeled Foods Rich in Calcium, they actually list foods that are high in sodium or salt, which is unfortunate, because it would be easy for kids to get enough calcium if ketchup and mustard really had 230mg per tablespoon.
While you may want to look elsewhere if you are looking for a lot of detailed information about specific teen topics, like eating disorders or discipline, Caring for Your Teenager is a great general reference book for parents of teens and can help 'to ensure that their child is on the right track to becoming a happy, healthy adult.'
