Welcome to keepkidshealthy.com...

I would like to welcome you to my medical and parenting web site. Keepkidshealthy.com is designed as 'a Pediatrician's guide to your children's health and safety.' It is not meant to replace the medical advice that you receive from your doctor. Instead, we hope to supplement the information that you receive from your child's physician, with a special emphasis on better health through preventative care.

Among the features that keepkidshealthy.com offers to parents are free parenting advice, online forums, info product recalls and pediatric news updated daily, an immunization schedule (just enter your child's date of birth and it will prepare a vaccine schedule according to the 2003 AAP recommendations), growth charts, asthma center (with customized peak flow calendars and action plans), breastfeeding center, a sophisticated baby name finder (which allows you to also enter multiple middle and last name to view different name combinations), a body mass index calculator to see if your kids are at risk of being underweight or overweight, height predictor, a lead poisoning screening quiz, plus info on kids nutrition, growth, development, common problems, diseases and conditions and infections in children.

The idea for starting keepkidshealthy.com had its origins when I realized that there was not enough time in most office visits to provide my parents with all of the information that I felt was necessary to promote their children's optimal growth and development. I began to develop and distribute handouts which contained a lot of parenting advice and information that I thought was important, and this allowed me to briefly cover the topics in the handout and allowed parents to read the rest on their own.

When I then found that there was still more information that I wanted to provide than could fit in a simple handout, I decided to move it all to the web. I provide this information to my patients and anyone else who would like information and help in caring for their children.

I also discovered that many of my parents were already looking to the Internet for health information, and they were often finding inaccurate and even dangerous advice. This led to another reason for starting keepkidshealthy.com, to give parents a place to go on the Internet for accurate information on children's health from a Pediatrician who closely follows the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

As I do not feel it is possible to diagnose a child's illness without a physical exam, keepkidshealthy.com will not dispense advice about your children's specific medical problems, especially for acute situations. We will accept questions, but will only answer those that are thought to be of general interest to other parents in the Ask the Pediatrician forum. We will also not prescribe or refill medications through the web site.

I just wanted to thank you for having this web site. The information about UTI's was very helpful. I also appreciate the fact that when I asked a question about further testing on my 2 1/2 year old with a UTI that I actually got a response!!! I have sent in questions at other web sites and never received a response. Thank you! We are also getting ready to move (and pregnant with our second child) so I found the "Choosing a doctor..." section also helpful.

Thanks so much for all of the wonderful information.

I am so incredibly grateful for your advice on the prevnar vaccine. Thank you so much for checking into this for me. I know that my daughter's case is rather unusual... Anyway, your help is much appreciated
